Kings County Distillery Tour
On Saturday afternoon, I went with George and some friends on a tour of the Kings County Distillery in Brooklyn. It is the first distillery to come to New York since prohibition. They make whiskey, bourbon and moonshine at their tiny warehouse office in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It’s like a bunch of post-college grads who got together, did some science experiments in the basement and...

Happy Half Marathon Training Monday!
Today kicks off my training for the More Half Marathon on April 3! This will be my 3rd half and I’m working towards a sub two hour finish time.
Unfortunately my Garmin didn’t realize it was my first day of training and decided to have a melt down before I even started running. But thanks to my handy wrist watch I know I finished 4 miles in about 39:50.
Half marathons are my...

Speaking of food labels...
Sometimes George and I like to play a game at his local deli. This deli is located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and has absolutely no healthy foods other than the turkey sandwiches that George occasionally always orders from the counter.
The deli has the most mind-boggling selection of packaged baked goods: honey buns, croissants, fruit pies, donuts, muffins, giant flaky things the size of your...

New food labels →
“The Obama administration wanted the package-front labels to emphasize nutrients that consumers might want to avoid, like sodium, calories and fat. But manufacturers insisted that they should also be able to use the labels to highlight beneficial nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and protein.
The administration concluded that ‘in the end, the label was going to be confusing,...

The Organic Elite Surrenders to Monsanto: What... →
In the wake of a 12-year battle to keep Monsanto’s Genetically Engineered (GE) crops from contaminating the nation’s 25,000 organic farms and ranches, America’s organic consumers and producers are facing betrayal. A self-appointed cabal of the Organic Elite, spearheaded by Whole Foods Market, Organic Valley, and Stonyfield Farm, has decided it’s time to surrender to...

Side planks - not as easy as they look.
I’m working on some core strengthening exercises and the side plank seemed like it was going to be cake, but NO.
Want to try?
1. Lie on your right side. Keep your right fore- arm flat on the floor (at a right angle from your body), and your feet stacked. 2. Lift your body up on to your forearm and the side of your right foot. 3. Aim for a straight line between your head and feet. 4....

Hello new followers...
Thanks to the infamous radar, I’ve gone from having a tiny little blog world to a much larger blog world. Very strange and unexpected and it has made me quite nervous!
But I’m excited! So here a few things about me so we can get acquainted:
I love reading about food, restaurants and nutrition. I’m a big believer in moderation. I am a vegetarian who occasionally eats...

94monkeys:
Man, talk about a Catch-22.
Absolutely the truth. Junk food tastes so good because humans are conditioned to crave sugary, fatty, and salty foods for survival. These foods trick our minds into thinking we need them, but the problem is, they are mostly made of artificial ingredients. Also, we’re not hunter/gatherers anymore! We have not reason to stockpile fats and sugars.

What I Ate: Flex Mussels
Upper East Side, NYC (no photos booo)
After returning from Sundance on the redeye and sleeping ALL DAY, George surprised me with dinner reservations at Flex Mussels. My neighborhood is pretty devoid of good food, but we’ve heard great things about this place so I was excited to try.
I had no idea the place was so large inside because the store front looks like there is room for maybe...

Since this is still a foodie/fitness blog...
…and not a filmmaking blog, I should let you know the following:
Since I’ve been in Park City I’ve hardly eaten anything.
I did not pack my running shoes for this trip.
I purchased a jumbo box of Goldfish crackers and a hunk of brie at the supermarket. This is what I’ve subsisted on.

I've been doing this new thing lately...
where I wake up at 7am for my morning run and then turn my alarm clock off and go back to sleep. This morning I convinced myself that it was raining (without looking out a window) and that it would be unhealthy to run in the rain. It was not raining.
THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR.
