Upstate Apple Picking - City Mice Head to the Country!

This past weekend, George and I headed to upstate NY for some leaf-peeping, apple picking, cider drinking and donut eating with our friends Davey and Lorna.  We took our chances finding a good place for brunch, but luckily we settled on the Iron Forge Inn which served us some amazing food in a country atmosphere.

After we fueled up with some buttermilk pancakes, eggs, and bloody marys, we headed to the Applewood Orchard & Winery in hopes of bagging as many apples as possible. When we arrived we quickly learned that it was the final day of the season, which basically meant hardly any apples were left.  It was a bit depressing at first…

But luckily we did manage to find a few areas where the trees were still plentiful and the grounds were less picked over.  We filled an entire bushel with apples, which ended up being WAY more than we originally planned to pick.  Good thing George was there to carry the bag..he got a serious arm workout.

After an exhausting afternoon of apple picking we settled down with some apple donuts and hard cider.  The cider tasted so fresh and apple-y, I wish I had bought a few more bottles to take tome.

We ended our trip upstate by getting lost in a corn maze!  It was my first experience in a corn maze, but apparently the goal is to get yourself as lost as possible before trying to find the way out.  We took our time to prolong our trip outside the city, knowing that soon we’d be sitting in traffic on our way home.

It was a beautiful day and we were sad to leave, but I’m happy to have begun a new yearly tradition!

Plus… wait until you see what I did with all those apples…

These photos were taken with my new Olympus PEN camera as part of the PEN Ready Project.
